Steel Jacketing is a highly effective structural strengthening technique used to enhance the load-carrying capacity, ductility, and seismic performance of reinforced concrete columns. The method involves enclosing the existing column with steel angles or steel plates connected by straps, creating a concrete-steel composite section. The gap between the steel jacket and the column is filled with approximately 25 mm of non-shrink grout to ensure proper bonding and passive confinement of the core concrete.
 
Steel jacketing significantly improves shear and flexural strength, restores deteriorated columns, prevents concrete spalling and bar buckling, and enhances energy absorption during seismic events. It also increases overall structural stability, improves load-bearing performance, and extends the service life of reinforced concrete columns with long-term durability and reliability. However, it is generally not recommended for columns exposed to rivers, lakes, or marine environments due to the risk of steel corrosion.

Process Of Steel Jacketing

  • Removing the concrete cover.
  • Cleaning the reinforcement steel bars using a wire brush or a sand compressor.
  • Coating the exposed steel bars with an epoxy material that would prevent corrosion and then applying epoxy bonding agent for high strength repair mortar for levling the surfaces.
  • Installing the steel jacket with the required size and thickness, according to the design, and making openings to pour the epoxy material through them that provides bond between the concrete column and the steel jacket.
  • Filling the space between the concrete column and the steel jacket with an appropriate epoxy material
